Care Practice: New helpline for informal carers launched during Carers Week
A new national UK survey during Carers Week has found that 74% of carers have reached "breaking point", stretched to their limit by the responsibility of caring for a family or friend (www.carersuk.org/Newsandcampaigns/News/1244212361)
The week has also seen the launch of Carers Direct hotline, part of the pledge in the Department of Health's Carers Strategy to reduce the time and stress for carers in searching out essential advice. Although it is funded by the Department of Health in England, the helpline has informed UKHCA that it can offer general advice and emotional support to callers across the UK.
It may be a useful number for members to refer family or friends of service users to, if they ask for advice or don't know where to start if they are new to caring responsibilities. The website includes links to the support homecare can offer, and to finding a UKHCA member. Carers Direct comprises a website and 7 days a week helpline (freephone 0808 802 0202). www.nhs.uk/CarersDirect/guide/practicalsupport/Pages/Homecare.aspx
