Coastline Housing is committed to supporting elderly and disabled residents to live independently within their own homes for as long as they want.

There are two types of adaptations. The first are simple things Coastline fits to help you in your home. The second are bigger changes which need a Disabled Facilities Grant from Cornwall Council.

Coastline's adaptations

We provide a dedicated disabled adaptations service which is open to all. These adaptations can be fitted at no cost if you request them:

  • Lever taps
  • Grab handles
  • Banister rails
  • Galvanised rails over external steps
  • Optical smoke detectors for the hard of hearing
  • Removal of internal thresholds and making safe

Disabled Facilities Grants for adaptations

Cornwall Council has created an Adaptations and Advice Service to manage all disabled adaptations. This allows them to follow the whole process from start to finish, making the application process quick and easy.

If you feel that you require an adaptation to your home then please contact the Access Team at Cornwall Council on 0300 1234 131, by email ach@cornwall.gov.uk, or you can get more information by visiting Cornwall Council's Home Solutions page.

The Access Team will arrange an appointment for an occupational therapist to assess your needs at home.

If the work required costs less than £1000 then a referral will be passed to Coastline to arrange for it to be done.

If the work required costs more than £1000 then the Adaptations and Advice Service within Cornwall Council will apply for a Disabled Facilities Grant on your behalf.

Sometimes the grant is means tested, so a financial contribution may be required. The Adaptations and Advice Service will let you know if this is the case.

Coastline will be involved, as any works on our properties need to have permission granted by us. Once the work has been completed, one of our surveyors will arrange a visit to ensure that it is to our high standards.
